Project Halo recommended drafting Matt Schaub and had him pegged as the #1 sleeper QB going into the season. Today (9/21), Matt threw for less than 200 yards, 0 TDs, and 3 INTs.
He was rated the number one sleeper going into 2008 for the following reasons:
1. Stable situation: same coaching staff, potent offensive system, commitment from management to the tune of 6 years, $48 million
2. Physical skills: 6'5", mobile, rocket arm, accurate passer.
3. Aerial attack weapons: Andre Johnson, Kevin Walter, Owen Daniels
4. Improved offensive line, running game
Despite these qualities, Schaub's statisticis through two games are as follows: 390 yards, 1 TD, 5 INTs
What happened? Pittsburgh, Tennessee, and Hurricane Ike happened.
In their other games, Tennessee held Cincinnati to 7 points and Jacksonville to 10 points.
In addition to shutting down Houston, Pittsburgh held Cleveland to 6 points and Philadephia to 15 points.
According to the numbers, through 3 weeks, the Texans have played against the two best defenses in the NFL on the road. It may not get any easier next week at Jacksonville, but the numbers indicate that the Jaguars will be the easiest opponent the Texans have faced yet.
Hurricane Ike knocked out power to the entire Houston metropolitan area.
The practice facility, the players' homes, and the coach's offices had no power. No computers, no film, no working after hours. The power outage severely limited pregame preparation.
The players' living conditions were extremely challenging as they faced two hour waits to get gas, no running water, no air conditioning, and limited access to groceries. With their personal lives in upheaval, it is understandable that the Texans players were not as prepared as most teams coming into week 3, and as evidenced by Andre Johnson's numerous dropped passes, their minds were understandably not 100% focused on the football game this past Sunday.
There is never a good excuse for throwing 5 INTs in two games, but when you look closely at the circumstances surrounding Matt Schaub's lack of fantasy production, owners that start 2 QBs have to appreciate the difficult situation and strongly consider starting him next week.
